Trini

I hated to admit it, but Quinn had been right.

Even just sitting, sheltered by the edge of the cruiser’s door, the icy wind seemed to find even the slightest opening in my suit.

I stared out again into the blinding landscape, chewing on my lip beneath my mask.

Maybe I hadn’t noticed before, but the weather, if possible, was getting worse. What had been a constant steady fall of snow was turning into a full-out blizzard.

What an awful place.

So far, the only signs of life had been the gorin. What did they even eat up here?

I shivered, this time not only because of the cold.

Not us.

Right now, keeping us off the menu was all that mattered.

I stared out, half dreading seeing any movement, until I had to close my eyes to rest them from the overwhelming whiteness, despite the polarized lenses of the goggles.

A whisper of sound, more the feel of the air moving around me, and I snapped my eyes open again.

A gorin crouched next to me in the doorway.

I raised the rifle, but it smacked it out of my hand and lunged towards me, knocking the breath out of me before I could scream.

I shook my head to clear it, then realized I was already upside down over its shoulder as it bounded away into the thickening blizzard.

“Quinn!” I shouted and beat on its back with my fists. “Put me down!” I screamed again, but then it shifted me, pulled me to its front and covered my mouth, never once slowing its loping run.

My mind stuttered, pieces shifting into a new picture.

That was a gloved hand over my mouth, not a clawed paw.

It was running upright, not on all fours.

It wasn’t a gorin at all.

And that didn’t make me feel one bit better.

I thrashed harder, struggling to break free, but the strong arm around me didn’t ease up in the slightest.

Finally, I stopped kicking and started thinking.

What would I do even if I did get free?

I forced myself to relax, trying to take even breaths and clear my mind.

My attacker had already left the cruiser far behind.

If I managed to get away, would I just wander, lost and alone in the snow, trying to find my way back to Quinn?

Would I even survive long enough to find him?

No, if this was another human, maybe this was the man Quinn was looking for.

Either way, he had to have some sort of shelter that he was taking me to. No one could survive out here unprotected.

It seemed like hours passed, but I had no way to tell time. The landscape never varied, just glimpses of monotonous white.

Finally, the man’s steps angled slightly and I craned my head, only to recoil back against his chest.

A vast wall of ice cut across the landscape before us.

And we weren’t slowing down.

Suddenly, everything was dark and I realized we’d entered a narrow crack, a crevice in the ice-covered rock wall.

I tried to pull myself into a small ball, but I couldn’t break free.

My captor twisted and turned, following the tunnel until finally he stepped out into a well-lit cave.
